Student Visas
Study in Australia

Australia is one of the most popular countries for study and attracts 1000s of students who live, study and work part time in Australia. Many students after completion of their studies will qualify for a skilled visa to remain, work, live and enjoy the Australian lifestyle.

To apply for a student visa you must first apply for and be accepted into a course that is registered by CRICOS with a registered course provider.

Student Visa Subclasses
  • 570 - Independent English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas (if you are taking the ELICOS course before another course you must apply under the main course subclass)
  • 571 - Schools (primary, secondary, and approved secondary exchange programs);
  • 572 - Vocational education and training sector (meaning Certificate I, II, III, and IV, Diploma, Advanced Diploma);
  • 573 - Higher education sector (covering bachelor degree, graduate certificate and graduate diploma);
  • 574 - Masters and doctorate
  • 575 - Non-award foundation studies/other full-time course not leading to an Australian award; and
  • 576 - AusAID or Defence sponsored sector.

Assessment Levels
Student visas are granted based on the student's passport country. The assessment levels determine the amount of documentary evidence of financial requirements and conditions in which the student will have to comply with. Click here to determine your assessment level.

Students must also provide evidence they have sufficient funds to cover the cost of accommodation, airfares, course fees and overseas student health cover. They will also need to meet health, character and English language (if required by their course)

Visa Conditions on Student Visas
Student visas conditions are quite strict and very closely monitored, any breach of these conditions can result in your visa being cancelled.

The student must satisfy attendance and/or course requirements and maintain a valid enrolment for the chosen course of study.
Students (and their dependents) are not allowed to work. After they have commenced studies, they can apply for work rights (limited to 20 hours per week).

The student must remain with the education provider with whom the student enrolled for the first 12 months of the course (or for the duration of the course if the course lasts for less than 12 months) - save for in exceptional circumstances.
The student's residential address (and any changes) must be notified to the educational provider within 7 days of arrival in Australia (or of any move).

Student Guardian Visas
If you are a legal custodian or relative of a student who wishes to study in Australia it may be possible to accompany them on a student guardian visa. The student will need to be under the age of 18 years. There is an exemption to this age limit if cultural circumstances exist.
